Diode Laser for BPH
Comparison with Holmium:YAG laser, ND:Yag, KTP lasers
Diode laser system has a wavelength of 980 nm. It offers a high simultaneous absorption in water and hemoglobin and is postulated to combine high tissue ablative properties with good hemostasis. The high gain of the diode laser allows the more efficient use of the photons that are generated; hence, the available diode laser units are small and portable (26kg) and special connections are not required (230V)
"An initial study of ten patients who underwent diode laser vaporization of the prostate showed encouraging results at 1 year follow-up. A Spanish study reported enucleation of prostate by diode laser in 17 patients. The mean prostate volume was 61.26cc. The mean loss of hemoglobin was only 2.1 g/dl. There were no major consequences or complications. Patients needed a short catheter placement and had good immediate post-operative improvement".
