The mechanism of PLDD therapy
What is PLDD?
PLDD is the acronym for "Percutaneous Laser Disk Decompression."
In Japan, it has been practiced at cutting-edge medical institutes since 1992.
Basically, pain occurs when weight is placed on nucleus pulposus in the intervertebral
disc and causes the nucleus pulposus to be herniated and in contact with a nerve.
This is called "disc herniation."
Thus, the pain can be relieved by decompressing the in-disc pressure on the nucleus
pulposus and thereby eliminating herniation of the nucleus pulposus. For this
purpose, C-arms (x-ray equipment) is used to visualize the herniated disc and a
special needle is inserted into the middle of the disc. Then a specially-processed fiber
is inserted into the needle and laser passes through it and irradiates the targeted site.
Due to the thermocoagulation effect of laser, the tissue is coagulated, transpired and
contracted.
This finally reduces internal pressure on the nucleus pulposus. The herniated nucleus
pulposus that compressed the nerve fits into the disc, eliminating the pain caused by
the nerve compression.
